All you Wanted to Know about Kite Surfing

Kite surfing, also called kite boarding, or fly surfing is a surface water extreme sport that became popular in the 1990s. Wind power is harnessed to move on the surface of the water on a surfboard. The kite looks like a parachute with inflatable tubes, which helps the kite hold its shape and float on water. The kite is connected to a control bar that is held by the kite surfer, and the surfboard is smaller is size than the regular ones, and may or may not have foot straps. The wind is the only force needed for propelling the ride, and hence waves are not required as in ordinary surfing.

Different styles of kite surfing have evolved since the 90s and each style gives a unique ride and opportunity to do various tricks. The most popular is the Freeride style of kite surfing where the person can simply have fun and have the opportunity to learn new tricks. This style is ideal in wide range of wind speeds. Usually, kites having fine re-launch capacity and twintip boards are used for this style.

Another style quite popular is the Freestyle, where it is possible to do bigger jumps, giving the surfer opportunity to perform different tricks while airborne. This style needs kites having good hang-time and boost, and smaller boards with twin tips. It has become the most common style at competitive events and has a free format.

The Wave-riding style is popular amongst surfers who like to ride the waves, and hence a wave break is necessary at the location. It is similar to tow-in surfing, and the kite is followed to reduce the pull. Since it is more to do with actual surfing, a directional board with good turning abilities is used. The board can be with or without foot straps.

In wakestyle, a wake-style board is used with bindings. This style allows the surfer to do various aerials and tricks, and sometimes ramps are used for takeoff. Usually twin tip boards in bigger sizes with wake booties are used, and this style is ideally suited for flat water.

Speed racing style is practiced mainly at race events where the goal is to achieve the maximum speed. Directional race boards equipped with longer fins are used in this style.

Here is a list of some of the best equipment available online for kite surfing.

A Guide to Buying Longboards for Sale

First-time buyers of a longboard may be overwhelmed by the different types of boards available in the market. Longboard is a longer variant of a skateboard and comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes.  It is best used for downhill racing, cruising and is flexible enough to roll over cracks and rocks.

When buying a longboard, one has to determine first the place where he is going to ride. For campus cruising, a longboard that is under 40 inches in length is ideal as it is easier to carry around. The skill of the rider should also be a consideration, as longboard 35 inches or shorter is more responsive and ideal for trashing, best suited for advanced riders but difficult for beginners to learn using.

There are also longboard characteristics that a buyer should get familiar with before buying a longboard. One of these is the flex, which absorbs the rough terrain on a ride and allow the user to ride lower to the ground. Flex of the longboard depends on the user- those wanting to get closer to the ground and have better center of gravity should go for a flexy longboard, but those who want better stability should go for a stiff longboard.

Longboards are either flat or concave. A longboard with concave looks like having a U-shape, allowing the rider to keep the feet locked in while performing slides and hard carves. On the other hand, a flat longboard has more flex than a longboard with concave.

Of course, first-time buyers should also consider the design of the longboard when buying one. Again, this consideration is basically up to the buyer himself.

Skim Boards

The Best Skim Boards

Skim boards are similar to surfboards; however, they are smaller and without fins. Skim boarding has become quite a popular sport, and it started in California amongst lifeguards who were looking for easy ways to travel across Laguna beaches.  Now it has developed into an extreme sport involving many tricks and shore break riding.

Most people prefer skim boards that reach up to chest height, with a thickness of around 3/4 inches. However the thickness will also depend on the material used in construction, as boards having a foam core could have more than two inch thickness. Most skim boards are characterized by the curve or nose lift, popularly called rocker. A constant rocker will have a continuous curve from tail to nose, and is ideal for riding big waves. A skim board that is flat at the tail part and having a curve through the rest of the board is a hybrid rocker. This one is ideally suited for gaining control and speed on medium sized waves and performing flatland tricks. The traditional rocker is very flat, except for the bend on the nose.

Wood is a popular rugged material for skim boards, as it resists general wear, and manages to withstand shells and rocks quite well. However, composite construction of carbon, fiberglass, and Kevlar is becoming more popular. Fiberglass is the cheapest; however, core made of high-density foam seems to be the most popular. These cores offer better buoyancy, but can be hard to handle, due to their lightweight. They can easily be buffeted by winds, and are prone to cracking and denting. Kevlar and carbon is usually added to provide more strength to the main material.

Here are a few of the best skim boards available online.

38 Local Motion Skim Board

This skin board having a length of 38 inches is ideally suited for skim boarders of intermediate level. The core is made of foam with an outside laminate in fiberglass. This board comes in attractive green color with red and orange stripes, and has a reasonable price tag of $59.99

It weighs around 200 pounds and is ideally suited for tall persons looking to do some professional moves on the waves. This is a professional board of fine material, and hence the cost is quite high at $284.95.

Wedge Zap Medium Skim Board

Weighing 120 pounds and having a thickness of half inch, the Wedge has a thicker core that promotes better flotation. The shape is ideally suited for learning as well as pro performance on riding a wave. Having a medium length of 45 inches and maximum breadth of 19.75 inches, it is one of the most popular models, with a reasonable price tag of $154.88.

7-Ply Maple G&S Skim Board

This is a smaller skim board with a length of 37 inches. It is made of traditional 7-ply maple wood, which makes it quite sturdy, and it costs only $38.21.
